Dear Friends,

I want to let you know about a very special event coming up that I will be performing in.
Guru Purnima is marked by the full moon in July, a day for honoring our teachers.
I personally will be dedicating the evening to my beloved teacher Swara Samrat Maestro Ali Akbar Khan, who passed away June 18, 2009.
The day also happens to be a special occasion in the Mayan 13-Moon Calendar. This is the “Day out of Time” – It is very auspicious, a day when "the veil between the worlds does not exist and time stands still…" The first day of the new year in the Mayan calendar is July 26th. This begins the next 13-moon cycle. What a perfect occasion to immerse yourself in sacred music and honor our teachers.
Hope to see you there!

Raga Class

Opening the Voice with the Ancient Art of Raga

August 30th - Nov 1st

Mondays 5:30pm

Indian MusicLearn to open the voice with the ancient meditative art of raga, a musical science based on the cycles of nature and evoking a vast array of emotions and moods, or "coloring" of the mind. Indian music teaches listening in a whole new way and increases musical understanding to a refined level. Vocal music is considered the foundation of all music in this tradition.

Classes focus on the intoxicating vocal compositions of Maestro Ali Akbar Khan (with whom Megan Yalkut, the instructor, has studied since 1994). Each class includes exercises, explanations of raga and Indian music styles, and practice in the rhythmic cycles and structure of Indian music.

Registration information:

EARLY BIRD SPECIAL is only $10 per class: Register by August 15th by paying $100 in full for the discount.

Registration online is already available on the events page at as well as more info.

After August 15th, the package price for the classes is $120 ($12 per class). You may prorate based on expected dates of attendance at the $12 per class as long as it is prepaid (by or on August 30th).

Note that the first class is optional for those with experience since it will cover basic concepts and notation reading. Please plan to attend it if you are new to Indian ragas.

For those who opt out of the orientation class, the rates are $90 for early bird and $108 after August 15. Other than the above options, classes will be $15 for drop-in each.

If at all possible please plan on taking the classes as a session, as classes will build upon each other and we may work on one long composition over the course of 2-3 classes.
